What we cover
The guides follow the decisions you make when planning a ski trip, in roughly the order you make them:
When to go
Snow, crowds and daylight month by month, and how school holidays shape the season.
2Choosing a resort area
Countries and resort types compared in general terms, plus why altitude matters.
3Lift passes
Day, multi-day, area and beginner passes, and the questions to ask before you buy.
4Rentals and gear
What to rent, what to bring, how boot fitting works and how to borrow the rest.
5Getting there by train
Rail routes into the Alps, the last mile to the slopes and traveling with skis.
6Budget plan
A step-by-step way to plan a cheaper trip without cutting what keeps you safe.
7First trip and families
Lessons, beginner areas, kids and what a first week on snow looks like.
8Mountain safety
The skier code, piste markings, cold, sun, altitude, insurance and calling for help.
9Avalanche safety
The five danger levels, where to read official bulletins and when to stay on piste.
What we do not do
- We do not sell trips, passes or rentals, and we do not take bookings.
- We do not rank or review resorts or recommend brands of equipment.
- We do not list prices, which change every season.
- We have no partner links and are not paid by any resort, rail operator or travel company.
- We are not a ski school, a mountain guide service or an avalanche warning service.
How the guides are written
We describe how things usually work across the Alps and say clearly when something varies by country, resort or season. Heights and daylight figures are rounded. Where a rule changes often, such as helmet rules for children or rail timetables, we tell you where to check rather than state a detail that may be out of date.
Safety information
Safety pages give general information only. Mountain conditions change daily. Always check the official avalanche bulletin for the region, follow resort closures and instructions from the ski patrol, and get training and a qualified guide before skiing off-piste. Start with the European Avalanche Warning Services, which links to every regional bulletin.
Corrections
If you spot something out of date or wrong, we want to fix it. Rail links, pass types and resort facilities change, and we update pages when we learn of changes. Our privacy policy and terms explain how the site works.
